A weekend of rides in Lichfield

Plenty going on this weekend in Lichfield on two wheels. First up on Friday evening (30th October) is the Halloween Mass, meeting at Speakers Corner at 8pm for a ride round the city finishing at a secret location and maybe even a drink or two. All welcome and the blurb says dress to impress!

On Sunday morning (1st November) meeting at Speakers Corner at 10:30am, the first Lichfield Re:Cycle winter ride takes place. The volunteers will be riding along with anyone who would like to gain encouragement or support to cycle year round in varying weather conditions. The ride length and duration will be decided on the day to meet the needs of whoever turns up. There is a Facebook event for the ride here.

Finally, later that day is the fun, free and family friendly Halloween Ride. Again meeting at Speakers on Dam Street, this time at 3pm. Following the successful Kidical Massive last month, this event is a short ride/parade suitable for all on bikes, scooters, in buggy’s or even on foot. Get dressed up and join in the fun as we take the short trip to Beacon Park.

Simon’s September

Man of many talents, our Simon reports on his busy month…

Following April`s 30 Days of Biking, September came in close, with a whole stack of bike related fun! First up, (I missed Critical Mass due to house moving duties) was our 3rd Alternative Sheriff’s Ride, another sunny day, another great turn out of some 35. Lichfield`s “proper” Sheriffs ride see 50 – 60 on horse back riding the City border, and is a tradition that  dates way, way back. We wanted to make the event more inclusive and so the Alternative was born! I managed several commutes, but the longest ride was the St Giles Hospice event, 100km, which I managed in 4 hours (& 47 seconds), a great event and one I would recommend. Next up Kidical Mass, the world wide day of cycle action, for kids! We had another great turnout, not far of the numbers London saw! A short ride for all on scooters, bikes and balance bikes following the rickshaw to the park for cake and fun. Lichfield Re:Cycle at Huddlesford Gathering, we were not sure what to expect as our first major event, but we had interest all day and some bikes to collect and some leads to follow….. another good day. Our bikes on show turned some heads, with my vintage/ratty fixie described as, and I quote “the best bike in the world”. The Cycle Show, still not sure about this one, each year I go, each year I say never again, but there is lots to see, all bright and beautiful and most interesting the fact that high end manufacturers are now building new “vintage” style bikes! Along side all of this, work on the vintage bikes continues…….”

Next year Simon is doing the 3 Cities Challenge, cycling from London to Brussels, via Amsterdam and Breda doing 300 miles over 4 days and raising funds for Regain. You can support him through his Facebook page here.
